At the Ruston Lincoln Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau, our team is busy every day developing and promoting the tourism economy of Lincoln Parish. In the last year there have been some changes and additions to the office so we would like to take to take this opportunity to introduce our staff to you! 

Deana Sherrill, Administrative Assistant
 
Deana joined the CVB team in May of 2013 as an Administrative Assistant. She is the first face visitors to the area will see and is ready to help with their travel needs. Deana is responsible for sending information packets, maintaining website listings, boardroom bookings, as well as assisting with social media marketing.

Deana came to the CVB from North Louisiana Medical Center where she was the unit secretary for two years. She also has a background in the hospitality industry having served as the administrative assistant for resorts throughout the country.

“After traveling and living all over the United States, it’s really great to be back home in Ruston. Lincoln Parish is such a welcoming place. ”

Deana graduated from Louisiana Delta Community College with and an LPN degree. She moved back to Lincoln parish in 2008 and is the mother of her two year old son, Kingston.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Getting to meet and speak with all the travelers who stop into the CVB.

What is your favorite things to do in Ruston and Lincoln Parish?
Listening to the live music at Portico, Ponchatoulas and Sundown, and also taking my son to the many parks.

What three items are always in your purse?
My keys, wallet and then my cosmetics bag.

What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon?
Looney Tunes, of course!

Do you prefer indoor or outdoor activities?
Outdoor activities in the cooler months. My son loves to play outside.

Meet the Staff: Part 2

In the last year there have been some changes and additions to the office so we would like to take to take this opportunity to introduce our staff to you!

Amanda Quimby, Marketing Director

Amanda joined the CVB staff in September 2013 as the new Marketing Director. She is responsible for implementing sales and marketing and communications/PR on behalf of the CVB.

Amanda came to the CVB from the marketing team at Skyjacker Suspensions in West Monroe, LA where she spent the last two years. During her time with Skyjacker, Amanda was responsible for social media and email marketing, brand development and promotion and event sponsorship. Amanda also has a background in the tourism industry, having served as the Communication Intern with the Monroe-West Monroe CVB for two years.

  “I accepted the Marketing Director position without much knowledge of the area. I have very much enjoyed getting to know the people here, visiting the attractions and restaurants and shopping the local boutiques. This really is such a beautiful place.”

Amanda is originally from Winnsboro, LA and moved to Monroe in 2005 to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. 

Amanda is a member of the Louisiana Travel Promotion Association and serves on the board of the Northeast Louisiana Film Commission.  

Q&A

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Getting to show and tell people the great things about Ruston and Lincoln Parish. I’ve fallen in love with this place so I feel lucky to get to promote it every day.

Being new to the area, what is your favorite thing about Ruston Lincoln Parish so far?

I absolutely adore Downtown Ruston. The area is beautiful and you just can’t beat the shopping and dining; especially when the restaurants have live music!

What three items are always in your purse?

My wallet of course, my Kindle Fire and lipstick. I can’t do without my lipstick.

What is your favorite snack food?

Raisinets. There is a bag of them sitting on my desk right now.

Are you a morning person?

I really wish I was a morning person, but no, I am absolutely not.

Meet the Staff: Part 1

At the Ruston Lincoln Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau, our team is busy every day developing and promoting the tourism economy of Lincoln Parish. In the last year there have been some changes and additions to the office so we would like to take to take this opportunity to introduce our staff to you!

Travis Napper, President and CEO

Travis joined the CVB staff in May of 2012. As President and CEO, Travis is responsible for leading sales and marketing efforts to promote Ruston and Lincoln Parish and oversees all administrative functions of the bureau.

Travis came to the CVB from Louisiana Tech University where he served as the Director of Orientation and Special Programs for six years. During his time with the university, Travis was responsible for administering all the orientation sessions for students and parents, as well as training and development of the orientation staff.

“I’m not originally from here, but I’ve always had ties to Ruston. Since moving here over a decade ago, I feel like I’ve been accepted into this family; and it’s a pleasure to be able to serve the area.”

Travis is also an active member of the community. He serves as Vice President of the Ruston Civic Symphony Society, sits on the board of the Dixie Center for the Arts and is a member of the Rotary Club of Lincoln Parish

Travis has been married to his college sweetheart Brittany Schimmel Napper for almost six years. They have two children, Emory, who is four years old and Stover, who will be one on Wednesday.

Q&A

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Any time that I get to hear the feedback from our visitors' experiences, and how much they enjoy our authentic community. 

Where is the best place to take the kids in Lincoln Parish?

Lincoln Parish Park or any LA Tech sporting event. My kids always have a great time!

What was the last app you downloaded?

Goodreads. I like it because it helps me keep up with all the books I have read, but more importantly all the books that I would like to read at sometime in the future.

You must like to read. What was the last book you read?

Death by Meetings by Patrick Lencioni.

What is the most special gift you've been given?

My wedding ring. It symbolizes the covenant that we have made to each other and reminds me of how thankful I am to have such a wonderful wife and mother to my kids.

Ruston Garden Club to Host Garden Tour

Three of Lincoln Parish’s most beautiful and scenic gardens will be on open to the public to view during the Jolis Jardins Garden Tour, sponsored by the Ruston Garden Club. The tour is set for April 27 from 9:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

             

“Jolis Jardens means beautiful gardens and we truly have some beautiful gardens in Lincoln Parish,” said Rene Gipson, a member of the Ruston Garden Club. “People really take pride in their gardens here and have been gracious enough to allow the public to view them.”

            

 The gardens on tour are at the homes of Noula and Steve Rodakis, Mary Sue and Charles Smelley in Ruston, and Renee and Todd Davison in Choudrant.

             

Garden lovers and enthusiasts can purchase tickets to view the three gardens for $10. Tickets can be purchased in advance from several locations including: Twin Oaks Nursery, located at 630 East Georgia Street, and Townsend House Gifts, located at 410 North Bonner Street and the Ruston Lincoln Convention and Visitors Bureau at 2111 North Trenton Street.

           

 Tickets can also be purchased the day of the tour at any of the garden locations.

“We encourage people to purchases their tickets in advance,” said Lou Ropp, a member of the Ruston Garden Club. “Tickets will include a map to the location of the gardens so this will definitely help people who may not be familiar with the locations of the gardens.”

     

Gardens to be visited are the Tanglewood Garden, 2500 Tanglewood Dr., home of Noula and Steve Rodakis.  This garden, with its European setting, will surprise guests with its many fruit-bearing trees, one of which is registered as “Noula’s Quince,” grown from a seed brought from Greece, Noula’s native country.

The Belle Point Garden is located at 170 Ramsey Circle, the home of Mary Sue and Charles Smelley.  The quiet, country air is coupled with the abundance of fragrance of over 50 variations of trees, shrubs and blooming flowers.  More than 20 island beds with garden structures, accessories and plantings tastefully transition from garden to woodland.

The 2005 Southern Living Idea Home garden of Renee and Todd Davison is located at 202 Brookside in the Squire Creek Community.  Accenting the French country character of the home are pronounced colors of red, purple, and white in abundant spring plants.  The compelling landscape of this garden compliments the perfect setting for “southern living.”

Tour goers should also make plans to by the CVB parking lot. There will be a plant sale, sponsored by the North Central Louisiana Master Gardeners and vendors with handcrafted garden art and accessories.

Tour sponsors include the Bank of Ruston, Bromell Agency Inc., and Twin Oaks Nursery and Garden Center.

Ruston to Host Half Marathon Event

Runners will need to be in tip-top shape if they plan on participating in the Piney Hills Half  Marathon on Feb. 10 because unlike most races, which are run on flat courses, Ruston’s race will be throwing in some “hilly” landscape to give runners an added challenge.

This Piney Hills Half Marathon will be Ruston’s first half marathon event, and is expected to attract as many as 250 runners in its first year. Doug Harvey, one of the event organizers, said he wanted to put together a marathon event in Ruston for a couple of reasons. Among those is the fact that North Louisiana has no marathon events in the first half of the year. He also wanted to offers runners something different from races hosted in other cities.

“We know people are running races this time of the year, but they are having to go to Dallas, New Orleans and Little Rock for those events, and we wanted to give them a local option as well as a half marathon that is different,” said Harvey. The difference in this half marathon is that it has embraced its landscape and will be known as a “hilly” half marathon. Not many races are willing to deviate from a primarily flat course.”

The Ruston Lincoln Convention & Visitors Bureau, a sponsor of the event, says the race has the potential to attract overnight visitors to Lincoln Parish.

“Running is a very popular sport for a lot of people, said CVB President/CEO Travis Napper. “We are thrilled to have this new event that will attract people to Ruston and Lincoln Parish. The event is generating tremendous buzz from the running community and the CVB is proud to be a supporter of this event.” 

The races starts in downtown Ruston, heads north and then west through the residential area, before taking the service road to Tech Drive and then snaking through the Louisiana Tech campus before returning downtown.

The registration cost is $60 per person. Harvey said entries will be accepted all the way up until the day of the race or until the number of participates reaches 250.

“We definitely feel that an athlete should come here and challenge themselves and walk away with a sense of accomplishment of not only conquering a half marathon but a hilly one.” Harvey said. “Another reason to support this event is our partnership with 4 Paws Rescue. They are our charity partner of this event and we want to do our part to help their dreams of having a permanent shelter built come to reality.”
